CATL and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia Forge Strategic Partnership for Local HEV Battery Production

On April 20, 2026, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) and CATL officially entered into a strategic cooperation partnership. The two parties will jointly carry out full‑chain localized production of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) batteries in Indonesia, covering the integrated manufacturing of battery cells, modules and packs.

With a total investment of approximately 1.3 trillion Indonesian rupiah, equivalent to 820 million US dollars, the project will be based at CATL’s existing plant in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia. The facility will be fully responsible for the manufacturing of battery cells and modules, assembly of battery packs, and production of supporting components. Production of parts and components is scheduled to start in the second half of 2026, and battery exports are expected to begin in mid‑2026.

Based on early-stage layout, the Karawang plant will have an initial capacity of 6.9 GWh and will be gradually expanded to 15 GWh upon completion by the end of 2026, providing solid support for stable project supply.

CATL has been laying out a full‑chain power battery industry in Indonesia since 2022, with a total investment of nearly 6 billion US dollars covering nickel ore development, smelting, battery materials, manufacturing and recycling, which highly matches Indonesia’s rich nickel resource advantages. Toyota and CATL have launched global battery cooperation since 2019.

Focusing on HEV batteries, the Indonesian project is a key implementation of their global strategic cooperation in Southeast Asia, aligning with Toyota’s regional strategy of promoting carbon neutrality through hybrid technologies.

Nandi Julyanto, President Director of TMMIN, stated that this cooperation will not only expand investment but also strengthen Indonesia’s complete battery industry chain from raw materials to finished products.

Ni Zheng, Executive President of CATL Japan Business Group, noted that the Karawang plant is fully operational, and this cooperation marks the starting point for both parties’ expansion in Indonesia and the broader Asian market, with deeper technological collaboration and capacity integration to come.

This strategic cooperation signifies a deep partnership between the world’s leading automaker and battery giant in the new energy sector of Southeast Asia. It will strengthen the competitiveness of Toyota’s hybrid models in the ASEAN market and consolidate CATL’s leading position in global hybrid and power battery sectors.
