Longi Commissions First European Integrated BESS Project and Opens Madrid Centre of Excellence

Longi has successfully completed grid connection and started operations of its 13.75 MW/50.16 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Montalto di Castro, central Italy, marking the Chinese company’s first deployment of a fully integrated storage system in Europe.

The BESS is situated near an existing 35 MWp photovoltaic plant. Longi highlighted that its AC-coupled discharge configuration allows the storage system to operate in parallel with the existing solar installation without the need for substantial structural modifications.

The project integrates multiple revenue mechanisms and ensures enhanced grid security through a capacity market contract, which is expected to provide an additional and relatively stable revenue stream. It is also backed by a comprehensive long-term service agreement (LTSA).

Longi stated that the hybrid system reflects the ongoing shift in Europe’s renewable energy asset modernisation and demonstrates its capability to deliver integrated BESS solutions in complex and mature energy markets. The company added that it intends to further expand its presence in Europe.

In a separate announcement, Longi revealed the opening of its Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Madrid, Spain. The hub is designed to strengthen local support for the company’s “PV + storage” solutions across Southern Europe, offering localized assistance for project development, operational management, technical training, and partnership development.

Longi plans to establish additional Centres of Excellence in key international markets by 2028.
