Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has formally issued authorization decrees for three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects boasting a combined installed capacity of 300 MW, advancing the country’s energy storage infrastructure deployment.

The newly approved projects are distributed across two southern Italian regions, including one facility in Puglia and two adjacent schemes in Campania region’s Avellino province, marking continuous progress in Italy’s renewable energy supporting capacity construction.

UK renewable energy developer Lightsource BP secured approval for its Galatina 1 BESS project via its Italian subsidiary Lightsource Renewable Energy Italy SPV 20. Sized at 100 MW/800 MWh, the storage facility will be constructed across the municipalities of Galatina and Aradeo in Lecce province, Puglia region, serving as the sole approved BESS project in Puglia in this latest batch of authorizations.

The remaining two 100 MW BESS projects are developed by Milan-based energy firm Sphera Energy, both located in Avellino province, Campania. The company’s subsidiary Sphera Ponente obtained permits to build a 100 MW battery storage system covering Andretta and Bisaccia municipalities. Meanwhile, its second subsidiary Sphera Levante has been authorized to develop another 100 MW standalone BESS project in Bisaccia.
