Canadian Solar Launches First Phase of 6GW HJT Solar Cell Facility in Indiana, US

Canadian Solar, a global leader in solar manufacturing, has officially inaugurated the first phase of its 6GW heterojunction (HJT) solar cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana, marking a key milestone in its U.S. domestic manufacturing expansion.


The project is operated by CSPower, Canadian Solar’s newly established U.S. subsidiary, and is recognized as the nation’s first manufacturing facility purpose-built for n-type HJT solar cell production. It complements the company’s existing solar module assembly plant located in Mesquite, Texas, further strengthening its local production footprint across the United States.


While the company did not disclose the exact operational capacity of the newly launched first phase, it previously confirmed a 2.1GW capacity for this phase. Construction and development of the project’s second phase is scheduled to kick off before the end of 2026.


Industry executives highlighted the strategic value of the new HJT facility. Rusty Schmit, President of CS PowerTech, stated that the plant will manufacture next-generation HJT solar cells, bolster U.S. domestic solar manufacturing capabilities, and enhance local grid reliability through the deployment of high-performance solar products. Colin Parkin, CEO of Canadian Solar, added that HJT technology is pivotal for developing high-efficiency solar modules. The new factory enables the company to deliver cutting-edge solar solutions, higher energy output and long-term value for clients, while advancing the growth of advanced domestic manufacturing in the U.S.


Canadian Solar initially targeted first cell production at the Jeffersonville site by late March 2026, with full production ramp-up scheduled for the end of June 2026.


The company’s decision to adopt HJT technology for its U.S. production carries significant industry implications. Ongoing legal disputes and a broad patent lawsuit filed by First Solar, a major CdTe thin-film module manufacturer, have created substantial legal barriers for the deployment of TOPCon technology in the U.S. market. Notably, Canadian Solar’s Texas-based Mesquite plant was originally designed for TOPCon module production, and the company has not clarified whether it will continue TOPCon production or fully shift to HJT modules following the launch of the new HJT cell facility.
