Greenvolt Powers Up 200 MW/800 MWh Turośń Kościelna BESS in Poland

Greenvolt Power, a subsidiary of KKR-owned Greenvolt Group, has officially commissioned the Turośń Kościelna battery energy storage system (BESS) in Poland’s Podlaskie Voivodeship, marking a key milestone in the company’s European energy storage expansion.


Boasting a power output of 200 MW and an energy storage capacity of 800 MWh, the new facility can operate at full load for approximately four hours and is connected to Poland’s national 110 kV transmission grid. Under a 17-year capacity market contract starting from 2028, the project will undertake a 170 MW capacity obligation, accounting for 85% of its full power rating.


The Turośń Kościelna BESS adopts reliable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology supplied by BYD Energy Storage, with P&Q acting as the general contractor. Technically configured with 196 containerized battery modules and 49 containerized transformer stations, the plant can respond to grid dispatching signals within seconds, delivering flexible and efficient grid support. Greenvolt estimates the system’s operational lifespan to exceed 20 years.


The project is the first operational asset stemming from a 2025 March strategic cooperation deal between Greenvolt and BYD Energy Storage, which targets up to 1.6 GWh of battery storage capacity development across Poland. It follows Greenvolt’s recent commissioning of the 99.8 MW/288.6 MWh Buj BESS in Hungary, the firm’s largest operational battery storage facility in the country, underscoring its accelerated footprint in Central and Eastern Europe’s energy storage sector.


“Battery storage remains a core growth pillar for Greenvolt. We are actively advancing a 5 GW global battery project pipeline across 13 countries to support the energy transition,” commented João Manso Neto, CEO of Greenvolt Group.


Weronika Nowak, CEO of Greenvolt Power, added that the newly launched project highlights the increasingly critical role of utility-scale energy storage in modernizing Poland’s power system. She confirmed two major upcoming projects – the Ełk and Siedlce BESS – are in the pipeline to further strengthen the company’s local presence.


Greenvolt is in the final construction phase of the Ełk BESS in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship, which features identical 200 MW/800 MWh specifications as the Turośń Kościelna facility and is scheduled for commercial operation in the fourth quarter of 2026. Once fully operational, the two paired projects will deliver a combined 400 MW power capacity and 1.6 GWh energy storage volume.


As of the end of June 2026, Greenvolt’s Polish renewable portfolio totals 2,595 MW of battery storage projects, complemented by 657 MW of solar PV and 238 MW of wind capacity. Industry auction data shows Poland’s 2028 capacity market main auction saw over 30 electrochemical storage projects secure contracts, with a collective capacity obligation of around 1.7 GW, reflecting robust market growth for grid-scale battery storage in the country.
