Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO) has granted a total of €433 million in funding via its RENOINN 2 programme to support 524 renewable‑plus‑battery energy storage (BESS) hybrid projects, financed through Spain’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRTR) under NextGenEU.
Of the total funding, €360 million (US$415 million) is assigned to solar PV paired with BESS, which dominates the programme’s awarded volume at 1.22 GW across 463 projects. The scheme is open to other technologies co‑located with BESS, yet solar PV secured nearly all awarded capacity.
The funding round delivers 2.3 GWh of total BESS capacity, an eight‑fold increase compared with the 351.6 MWh awarded in the initial RENOINN programme.
RENOINN 2 supports innovative hybrid installations across five funding streams: agricultural land, floating solar (FPV), infrastructure‑based deployments, self‑consumption and renewable heat pumps.
Agrivoltaics (agriPV) represents the largest segment, attracting 882 MW of solar PV together with 1.7 GWh of associated BESS capacity. Half of the funded agriPV projects are located on cereal, olive grove and orchard farmland, requiring solar panels mounted at heights above four metres. Most agriPV installations will include control plots to study interactions between PV arrays and crop production.
A further 29 floating solar projects received grants, totalling 46 MW solar PV and 51 MWh BESS. Under the self‑consumption stream, 274 projects cover 70 MW of solar PV coupled with 150 MWh of battery storage.
