Ola Electric, one of India’s prominent electric vehicle manufacturers, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with renewable energy developer Axis Energy to deploy up to 5 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) per year starting from 2028. The five‑year MoU, valid until 2032, sets a cumulative target of 20 GWh, securing a key pipeline for Ola Electric’s upcoming Ola Mahashakti manufacturing platform.

Scheduled to launch on August 15, Ola Mahashakti is an energy storage platform designed for commercial, industrial and utility‑scale applications. Ola Electric noted that its Mahashakti BESS are developed in India on a vertically integrated manufacturing platform covering cell technology, manufacturing and system engineering.

Axis Energy, one of India’s leading developers of storage‑backed renewable projects, has secured grid approvals for over 3.75 GW of projects in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, with an additional 3.5 GW capacity in the pipeline. These projects, including firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE), hybrid and non‑solar configurations, require large‑scale BESS to enhance renewable energy integration, grid reliability and deliver round‑the‑clock clean energy.

The collaboration aligns with India’s national energy transition goals, as the Central Electricity Authority estimates the country will need over 400 GWh of storage deployment by 2032.

Reddy Kataru, chairman and managing director of Axis Energy Ventures, described the MoU as an “important step” toward evaluating domestic BESS solutions. Bhavish Aggarwal, chairman and managing director of Ola Electric, stated that the company’s vertically integrated cell‑to‑system platform will deliver strong value across safety, performance and total cost of ownership, adding that the partnership with Axis Energy is an important early validation of Mahashakti’s potential.
