
Leading Indian PV manufacturer Vikram Solar has secured board approval to build a 9GW solar wafer and ingot production facility at its newly inaugurated 6GW module manufacturing campus in Gangaikondan, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The strategic expansion will consolidate the full solar PV value chain, covering ingot, wafer, cell and module production, on a single site.
The expansion initiative is designed to cut reliance on imported solar components, strengthen India’s domestic photovoltaic supply chain, and advance the country’s energy self-sufficiency goals under the Atmanirbhar Bharat national initiative.
Spanning nearly 600,000 square feet, the greenfield Gangaikondan manufacturing campus will create more than 800 local jobs. Officially inaugurated recently, the 6GW module plant was commissioned last month and will produce Vikram Solar’s high-efficiency Hypersol n-type TOPCon G12R modules. The advanced modules feature power outputs ranging from 615W to 640W with a maximum conversion efficiency of 23.69%.
In April 2026, Vikram Solar achieved a major global deployment milestone, surpassing 10GW of cumulative solar module installations worldwide. The company doubled its global deployment volume from 5GW to 10GW within two years, with approximately 1.5GW of modules exported to international markets.
Headquartered in Kolkata, Vikram Solar has outlined an ambitious medium-term manufacturing roadmap. The company targets 9GW of solar cell capacity by FY2027, an additional 3GW of cell capacity by FY2028, and 12GW of integrated wafer and ingot production capacity by FY2029-30.
