GEN-I Sonce has teamed up with Bucharest-based Waldevar Energy to deliver a major 55 MW / 220 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project located in Gheorgheni, eastern Transylvania, Romania.
The two parties have officially signed an EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) contract for the utility-scale storage facility. Building on their prior collaboration confirmed at Intersolar Europe 2026 for the 110 kV, 63 MVA Gheorgheni substation, the new BESS project is scheduled for full delivery, testing and commissioning by the third quarter of 2027.

As one of Slovenia’s leading renewable energy solution providers, GEN-I Sonce continues to expand its European energy storage footprint. The company targets 800 MW of operational utility-scale BESS capacity by the end of 2026. In July this year, its investment arm GEN-I Invest strengthened its regional layout by acquiring three operational BESS sites in neighboring Bulgaria, adding a total of 30 MW / 76 MWh of storage capacity across Belovo, Momchilgrad and Parvomay 1.
Cristian Dragomir, CEO of Waldevar Energy, highlighted the strategic significance of the project for Europe’s energy transition. “For years, the industry’s priority was adding renewable generation. Today, the core challenge is matching power supply with real-time system demand. Battery storage has become a pivotal strategic asset for the energy sector, delivering flexible energy storage and on-demand discharge to stabilize grid operation,” he said. “The Gheorgheni BESS project vividly demonstrates how large-scale storage facilities build a more flexible and resilient energy system. It also deepens our long-term partnership with GEN-I Sonce and consolidates our expertise in executing complex utility-scale BESS projects across Europe.”
