VSL PowerHive to Build 7.5 GWh BESS Assembly Plant in Tamil Nadu, Targeting 30 GWh Battery Capacity by 2030

VSL PowerHive, a wholly owned subsidiary of Vikram Solar, will construct a battery energy storage system (BESS) assembly facility in Oragadam near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, with an initial annual capacity of 7.5 GWh. The plant can be phased scaled up to 15 GWh, supporting the group’s target of 30 GWh total battery manufacturing capacity by 2030.

Spanning around 165,000 square feet, the facility is scheduled for inauguration in January 2027 and commercial operation in April 2027. Under India’s Make in India initiative, it will assemble LFP-based energy storage products for utility-scale and commercial & industrial (C&I) segments. The product lineup includes 5.016 MWh and 6.25 MWh liquid-cooled BESS containers, PowerHive P261 battery cabinets, utility-scale storage systems and renewable-integrated storage solutions.

PowerHive plans to launch cell manufacturing with a 7.5 GWh programme starting from 2028, aiming to develop a fully domestic integrated battery value chain from cell to complete storage systems. The firm is developing indigenous battery technologies and filing multiple patents to enhance independent technology capability and reduce dependence on imported know-how.

“Storage is the bridge between India’s renewable ambition and round-the-clock clean power,” said Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar. “As the country scales up solar and wind, reliable energy storage will shape the next phase of energy transition, and this capability must be built in India. The new plant marks a decisive step forward and extends Vikram Solar’s footprint across the clean energy value chain from power generation to energy storage.”

“Energy storage makes renewable power reliable, and India’s demand for storage is growing faster than ever,” commented Arun Mittal, CEO of VSL PowerHive. “With this project, we aim to build world-class battery manufacturing capacity in India, starting with 7.5 GWh of system assembly and moving to cell production and a full integrated ecosystem. Our goal is to deliver domestically manufactured, future-ready storage solutions for utilities, developers and industries in the decades ahead.”
