Tvarditsa, Bulgaria, 20 October 2026 – Bulgaria has kicked off construction of its first battery park developed with Tesla, with Prime Minister Rumen Radev attending the groundbreaking ceremony in the Tvarditsa industrial zone of Sliven Province. Energy Minister Iva Petrova and Innovation Minister Ivan Vasilev were also present at the event.
The Tvarditsa facility is a 5-hour, 300 MWh energy storage system, comprising 80 Tesla Megapack 2XL units and 20 Tesla transformers. It is scheduled to enter commercial operation in Q2 2027.
This project marks the first of three battery storage sites delivered jointly by Asarel Trade, Power Profit and Tesla. The three-project portfolio totals more than 2,300 MWh of storage capacity with an overall investment of €350 million. Following the groundbreaking, the Bulgarian government held discussions with Tesla to explore additional investment opportunities in the country.
While mid-sized among Tesla’s European energy storage deals, the Tvarditsa project is a firm, shovel-ready scheme. Unlike framework agreements such as the 25 GWh NatPower deal for Italy and the UK and the roughly 3 GWh Zhero agreement in Italy, it uses the already-shipping Megapack 2XL hardware. It will also come online 9–12 months earlier than the large-scale Green Turtle project, a 2,800 MWh single-site facility based on the newer Megapack 3, targeted for commissioning at end-March 2028.
